What causes high blood pressure?

There are two types of hypertension:

  • Primary hypertension. Also known as essential hypertension, this type has no underlying or identifiable cause. It tends to develop slowly and gradually over many years.

  • Chronic disease. Long-term medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disease may increase your risk of getting high blood pressure.
